now you see them, now you...

from Miles to Go, page 36

Cover: Miles to Go (drawing of orange dog in a tree)

one hundred tiny starlings
balance on wire tightrope
composed on azure canvas
            freeze-framed

within a millisecond
a silent secret synapse
ripples through each tiny form

Miles to Go, p. 53

ernie watts’ sax wails
floating me on a liquid swell
down green dolphin street
where swirling fog surrounds
as i soar above the clouds
earphones clamped secure.

i’m smoothly scooped up
tumble down a waterfall
cascading notes of milt jackson
carry me into the nearness of you
suddenly shorty rogers and
art pepper grab my attention by
the scruff for a wild ride on popo
as this bird bounces over turbulence then
levels out with the sweet trumpet of
             chet baker’s funny valentine.
