What to Do With Blessings
from In the Company of Birds, page 1
Petaluma, 2005
Here’s a stray, an old dog,
a grandpa with a white face,
dry nose, and dreadlocks for
an apron.
I call him Rex, then I call him Angelo,
he’s golden, he’s soulful,
he comes when he’s called, Rex Angelo.
Do I want a dog, no I didn’t want
a dog, I never wanted a dog, what
shall I do with this old grandpa dog,
maybe put a blanket down, maybe
feed him, name him Rex Angelo and
watch him sleep, large and torpid,
like blessings often are.
