At Boot Springs
from Walks: Best Poems, page 22
Foot Print Press, Santa Rosa, 2007

While the breeze rustled my bed
Of fallen oak leaves
In a clearing of Pinyon Pines
And Alligator Junipers,
With Mexican Blue Jays
Cawing as they flutter through the trees,
And White-Breasted Nuthatches
Hopping lightly from branch to branch,
I lay naked
In mid-March
Under an afternoon sun
And burned my ass.
