Dandy Lion in the Window

by Christopher Scott Baldwin

On a sunlit window sill
In a crystal vase
She has become an example
to all the lawn weeds before her
of what a peasant and a pest of suburbia
could become

Somehow, to a child’s eyes
the slender green strand
the golden firework
has a priceless value
and is a very important gift
for a burdened, loving mother

They smile and watch her blaze
in the afternoon hue
The crystal and the water
plays with reflected light
sending it to sparkle the room
To sniffle
