THE WALK ACROSS THE
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE A SUCCESS!

On Sunday, October 8, 2006, nineteen people, many with SD and/or their family members, walked the span of the Golden Gate Bridge in both directions to raise funds for research to find a cure for SD; to educate medical professionals and the public about SD; and to support people who cope daily with the frustrations of communicating with individuals and groups at work, at home and socially.

We had great walking weather: sun, temperatures in the low 70's and not much wind.

The final count isn't in yet, but close to $7,000 was raised, including two anonymous matching grants of $2600.

For photos of this event, see the BRIDGE WALK page.

THANKS to Marilyn and Ron Bean for graciously hosting us at their lovely home. Our celebration included a brown bag lunch, photo taking, chocolate cake and the NSDA banner designed by Marcia Sterling for NSDA booths.

It turned out that Sunday was part of Fleet Week and the Blue Angels were performing during our WALK. This meant major traffic and parking problems! Marilyn and Ron came to the rescue, driving eight of us at a time to the bridge in two cars. And then, with the help of cell phones, they returned to the bridge to chauffeur us back to leftover chocolate cake and Starbucks coffee.

What is Spasmodic Dysphonia?

Spasmodic Dysphonia (SD), a focal form of Dystonia, is a neurological voice disorder that involves involuntary spasms of the vocal cords causing the voice to break up or to have a tight, strained, or strangled quality. Some people with SD have a breathy voice that can hardly be heard.

The bridge walkers were honoring Dot Sowerby, whose years of hard work for the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association (NSDA) inspire us all. THE WALK actually started a year ago with the look of joy on Dot's face when she finished her walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and then walked it again back to the car
